Altrascal Ultrasonic Surgical System

The Altrascal is an ultrasonic surgical system: rather than passing current through the patient, it vibrates a blade around 55,500 times a second, and the resulting friction cuts tissue and seals vessels at a far lower temperature than electrosurgery. Lateral thermal damage is correspondingly small, which matters when working close to nerve, bowel or vessel.

Output reaches 35 watts continuous at up to 150 VAC RMS, driven through a universal connector with mechanical instrument recognition, so the generator identifies the SECUTE handpiece attached to it. A 5-inch LCD touchscreen carries the settings, and the footswitch is wireless — there is no pedal cable to route across the theatre floor.

Tissue impedance monitoring adjusts delivery through the cut. The unit is rated Type CF for the applied part and Class 1 for shock protection, with IP21 ingress protection on the enclosure and IP68 on the footswitch, and runs on any supply from 88 to 285 V AC at 50/60 Hz. It measures 335 x 395 x 160mm and suits laparoscopic, general and oncology surgery.
