Overview
This plant produces 500 litres an hour of dialysis-grade water by reverse osmosis, the mid-range capacity for a renal unit running a full daily shift pattern across a moderate number of stations.
Water feeding a dialysis unit must be treated well beyond drinking-water standard, because a patient meets several hundred litres of it a week across the dialyser membrane. Reverse osmosis removes dissolved salts, organic contaminants, bacteria and endotoxin, and the pre-treatment stages ahead of the membrane strip chlorine and particulate that would otherwise shorten membrane life.
