This plant produces 750 litres an hour of dialysis-grade water by reverse osmosis, the largest capacity in the range and the one specified for busy renal units running multiple shifts across many stations.
Dialysis water has to be treated far beyond drinking-water standard: a patient is exposed to several hundred litres a week across the dialyser membrane, with no intestinal barrier in between. Reverse osmosis removes dissolved salts, organic contaminants, bacteria and endotoxin, while pre-treatment ahead of the membrane removes chlorine and particulate that would otherwise degrade it.
