KBM 70Overview
The KBM 70 is the main component-separation centrifuge in a blood bank, not a general laboratory instrument. It prepares packed cells, platelet rich plasma, platelet concentrate and cryoprecipitate, and handles buffy coat separation and leukocyte-poor red cells, for processing centres of any size.
Refrigeration runs from -10 to +40 degrees C and pre-cools to 4 degrees C within a few minutes, holding blood at temperature throughout the spin so that red cells are not damaged by heat. The refrigeration system is CFC-free with bright-annealed ASTM B Grade 68 copper tubing.
A brushless induction motor with frequency drive runs maintenance-free with very low vibration and noise, accelerating and decelerating smoothly to protect the separated layers. A safety lid interlock prevents the cover opening during centrifugation, an unbalance cut-off stops the run and indicates the fault if bags are not evenly loaded, and the instrument self-diagnoses errors. Menu-driven microprocessor control holds 21 programs in tamper-proof memory, including seven predefined blood bank protocols.
